Nottinghamshire’s policing heroes are set to take centre stage in a television documentary that highlights the incredible actions of the force’s officers and staff.

Expect stories of bravery, incredible investigative work and inspirational moments as the force reflects on a year like no other.

Notts Police: Operation 2020 presented by Iain Chambers of  Gem 106 Radio fame will be broadcast on Notts TV (Freeview channel 7 and Virgin Media channel 159) at 9pm on Saturday 28 November. It will also be premiered on Nottinghamshire Police’s YouTube channel and Facebook at the same time.

The hour-long feature has been created in place of the annual force awards, which are usually held at the Nottingham Albert Hall.

Sadly the force had to cancel this year’s face to face event due to the Covid pandemic. Faced with the same issue most other organisations and forces have abandoned or postponed ceremonies, but force leaders in Nottinghamshire were not prepared to let staff and officers down by not recognising them properly – and the brainchild of having a documentary instead was formed following an idea from an officer and two members of staff at HQ.

Nottinghamshire Police’s Chief Constable Craig Guildford said: “The annual awards ceremony is a key date in the calendar where those in our workforce are rightly recognised for the extra mile they have gone in their day to day lives here at the force.

“Every year without fail there are some amazing stories of heroism, tenacity and sheer hard work, and I for one was not going to let this year’s actions slip by unnoticed, especially given the very trying circumstances my officers and staff have had to work under this year.

“I am determined that we will hold the annual event as we normally do again this time next year, but for now we have done something which I think is more than just different – it is innovative and really creative.

“This documentary shows you the depth and breadth of the work we do as a force both as staff and officers and goes into never seen before details around some of the most harrowing and terrifying issues teams have had to deal with this year.

“It also shows you just what a year it has been as we have dealt with Covid and the impact that has had on the force. And despite these more difficult times it also shows you how we have not changed in terms of our pace and ambition to make this force one of the best in the country with our recruitment drive aimed at ensuring we have more cops where they are needed while being much more representative of the people we serve.

“I really would encourage everyone out there to sit back and enjoy this treat on Saturday night. This is the last weekend before lockdown is lifted so why not end it with a really good viewing night, which this documentary will give you, I guarantee.”

Highlights include the dramatic moment officers took the opportunity to save the life of a terminally ill child, the way a boy turned his life around thanks to the force’s remarkable cadet programme and how an officer bravely put herself in danger to stop a killer’s rampage.

The special will be hosted on Notts TV’s website on demand for those who do not have access to the channel and it will also be available to watch at any time on YouTube and Nottinghamshire Police’s Facebook.
