A brief background on Volunteer Police Cadets
Police Cadets were introduced back in 1951 however at this time it was only open to boys, girls were first introduced in 1966. Cadets were then phased out around 1988. Then in 2013 the decision was made to bring back Cadets and we recruited 67 enthusiastic young people onto the Cadet Programme. Following on from the success of its first year we then recruited a further 78 in 2014 and further 78 in 2015.
Our Cadet Programme is going from strength to strength and it offers young people the opportunity to learn new skills, take part in exciting activities and create lifelong friendships. The Cadets are all aged 16 upon joining and commitment to a two year training and development programme, our Cadet bases change each year but they are always within the heart of the communities that we serve.
To be a Cadet costs nothing but the experiences are invaluable.
So, what does a Cadet do?
Get out and get active
Cadets take part in team building exercises, sports activities, and will have the opportunity to take part in the National CadetCompetition which is held at different locations throughout the UK. The last National Competition took place in Scotland!
Volunteer in your local community
Upon joining the Cadet Programme, each Cadet commits to volunteering for a minimum of four hours each month to assist the police in attending community events and general public engagement activities.
Gain Knowledge
The Cadets meet once a week on a weekday evening, where they will learn about a range of topics including; the history of policing, first aid and conflict management skills. They will also have the opportunity to meet specialist units such as the dog section, crash investigation team and the underwater search unit.
The Cadets will also learn about our current campaigns; including those to reduce road traffic accidents, anti-social behaviour, and alcohol related crime.
